In response to World Urbanization Day, towards the theme of the 12th Session of the World Urban Forum taking place in Cairo (Egypt), and at the same time welcoming Vietnam Urban Day on November 8 and Vietnam Law Day on November 9, the Ministry of Construction organized the Vietnam Urban Sustainable Development Forum 2024 with the theme: “Home is where it starts: Strengthening institutions for sustainable urban development in Vietnam”.

This is an event organized annually by the Ministry of Construction to promote dialogue, cooperation and knowledge exchange between State management agencies, professional social organizations, enterprises, institutes, schools, research, education and training establishments, international development partners and organizations and individuals interested in urban development. The Vietnam Urban Sustainable Development Forum will be a place to gather opinions of experts, scientists, and enterprises in the field of urban development domestically and internationally to help ministries, departments, and central and local sectors in developing Resolutions, Action Programs, Strategies, and Projects to specifically implement Resolution No. 06-NQ/TW dated January 24, 2022 of the Politburo on planning, construction, management and sustainable development of Vietnamese urban areas to 2030, with a vision to 2045 and the Government’s Action Program in Resolution No. 148/NQ-CP of the Government dated November 11, 2022 to implement Resolution No. 06.

At the same time, the Forum will provide a platform to discuss and address new urban challenges, creating opportunities for stakeholders to cooperate to create a comprehensive urban environment in all three economic, social and environmental aspects, towards the goal of sustainable development.

In his opening speech at the Forum, Deputy Minister of Construction Nguyen Viet Hung emphasized that Vietnamese cities are increasingly contributing positively to socio-economic development, enhancing the country’s position with an urbanization rate of about 43.1% and about 902 cities nationwide. Many coastal cities have formed new brands, and the quality of life is increasingly improved.

Thanks to the contribution of urban areas, the size of Vietnam’s economy in 2023 will reach 430 billion USD. The average income in urban areas is nearly 1.5 times that of rural areas. The quality of urban life is increasingly improving with significant improvements in the living environment, urban landscape, access to urban technical infrastructure and development opportunities for the community.

However, the current urban development process still has many shortcomings and limitations such as widespread urbanization, low urban density, low quality of urban infrastructure, environmental pollution, urban flooding, lack of housing, green space, etc.

Faced with these challenges, experts discussed and shared about key policies, implementing new urban goals and programs, adapting to the harsh situations of climate change. These are essential topics to help businesses, companies, and localities raise important issues to discuss together, contributing to the development towards sustainable development in urbanization this year and in the coming years.
